A collection of brief essays by the Director of the Academy for Theological Studies Dr. Pantelis Kalaitzidis entitled Nel mondo ma non del mondo. Sfide e tentazioni della chiesa nel mondo contemporaneo (“In the world but not of the world. Challenges and temptations of the Church in the modern world”) was recently released in Italian translation by the Qiqajon publication House of the monastic fraternity of Bose (Northern Italy).

In this volume, Dr. Pantelis Kalaitzidis discusses the dialectical tension between present and future, history and eschata, as well as the risks followed by its loss, especially focusing on particular issues related to the role and the position of Orthodoxy in the modern world, such as: the complex relationship of the latter with different cultures and national identities, its participation in the ecumenical dialogue, its difficulty to positively welcome the language of human rights and to accept that all people are equal, as well as the expression of an important and prophetic word against the current economic and social crisis.

According to the author, the Christian is not entitled to adhere to the past; His being is oriented to the future, from which expects to live the fullness of his/her life. At the same time, however, past and history are neither removed nor abandoned, but they are transformed. The same applies to the Church, which lives in history, without owing its being to it. As clearly stated in the title of the book, the Church lives “in the world” but it is not “of this world”.
